Dear Women:
I am excited about the 12th biennial DWU conference that will take place in the City of Roses ( Portland , Oregon ) July 22-26, 2009! Our theme for the conference is "Honoring our Deaf Women Pioneers". As you know, Oregon was the last stop on the Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon . It was the pioneer women of these families who held them together throughout the long and treacherous wagon trip. The 2009 DWU Conference is a perfect time to look back at the accomplishments over the years that the pioneering women in the Deaf Community made that enriched our lives and paved the way for new strides to be made for deaf women.
We have some great activities planned! Miriam Richards will provide a keynote presentation that will inspire you as you learn how this courageous woman conquered the High Points of the United States , in spite of having Multiple Sclerosis. Some of the entertainment that is planned includes comedienne Pinky Aiello, a lunch cruise on the beautiful Columbia River and a performance honoring our pioneers by the Deaf Women Pioneer Troupe, and more!
Looking forward to seeing, being, and growing with all of you at our conference in 2009!
Damara Paris, 2009 Conference Chair
